 Our Agency originated in 1876 in Paterson, New Jersey as the Eugene H. Olden Agency.
In 1914 Frank J. Hanson joined the original agency, which became Olden and Hanson, Inc. on May 6, 1925.
Hanson assumed control on Olden's death, October 23, 1930.
In 1939, Lewis A. Ryan Insurance Agency was merged with Olden and Hanson, Inc. Upon the death of Lewis
Ryan, James L. Ryan joined the firm. The name was changed to Olden-Hanson & Ryan, Inc. on December 19,
1955 and, on November 20, 1958 to Hanson & Ryan, Inc. Frank Hanson passed away November 7, 1960 after
forty-six years of service to the Agency.
In 1961, James L. Ryan became President, a position he held until 1984 when he assumed the role of
Chief Executive Officer. James Ryan was actively involved in the operation of the Agency until his
death on October 13, 1987. James Ryan was the President of New Jersey Independent Agents Association
and was awarded the Henry A. Franz award posthumously in 1988.
Terry M. Ryan, representing the third generation of Ryan’s, began his affiliation with the Agency in
February 1971. He was named President in 1984 and has continued as the Chief Operating Officer since
that time. His son, Sean, representing the fourth generation of Ryan's in the Agency, joined Hanson
& Ryan in September 1996.
 The office, which had occupied several Paterson locations over its history, moved to Union Boulevard,
Totowa in 1968. A fire destroyed that location on October 30, 1988 and resulted in the move to our
present location on July 1, 1989. We occupy almost 10,000 square feet of office space in this modern,
professional building in an especially convenient location.
Over the years Hanson & Ryan has grown through a fortunate combination of sales expertise, excellent
insurance company partnerships and high quality acquisitions. On September 1, 1989 the Agency acquired
Zester and Company, Inc., a former Paterson insurance agency established in 1926 and founded by William
Zester. Zester management retired as of April 1, 1993.
In September 1996 Hanson & Ryan began to develop its mission and vision to become a trademark for truly
professional insurance sales and consultation. Investing in a partnership with TCI/Cablevision, we began
to market our agency and it's services comprised of almost 700,000 viewers in Passaic, Bergen, Morris and
Essex counties. Our Agency's name is the most widely recognized independent insurance agency in northern
New Jersey.
 Hanson & Ryan also acquired Fish Insurance Associates (H. Earl Munz Agency) in December 1997. With the
purchase of Fish Insurance Associates, we gained a Master Broker contract with Blue Cross of New Jersey
and an existing relationship with nearly 300 Life and Hea1th agents throughout the state.
North Jersey Brokerage was fulfilled to accommodate the direct sale and outside brokerage of employee
benefit plans, particularly health insurance. The Agency currently handles over $20,000,000 in health
sales. In addition, it manages the sale of life and disability products and maintains Certified Financial
Planning capabilities to fully serve our clients.
On May 20, 1997 we formally incorporated and trademarked the Internet Insurance Agency and began development
of our first web site. That site became fully operational in 1999 at www.hanson-ryan.com. As the Internet
and sales opportunities grow, our Agency is well positioned to deal with this evolving technology.
In over a century of involvement in the insurance business the Agency has clearly demonstrated its integrity,
ability and commitment to its clients, employees, profession and community. That resolve has helped the Agency
enjoy the highest respect and reputation in the community and with its peers.
